Acne is one of most stressful things a person can go through. Every day you’re reminded of a condition that goes against what society says you should be (pretty/handsome/beautiful). Even though the reality of the situation is that you can truly be happy even with acne (I reached a level of happiness I never knew was possible when I still had acne). With saying that, I’m also a pragmatic person and understand that people have an innate desire to look a certain way.
Since there’s not much we can do to escape the pressure society puts on us to look a certain way, we can at least do things to reduce the stress that we feel from it (since we’ll probably never meet society’s standard of beauty).
By doing these things on a regular basis, you will help to do a few things.
Firstly, you’ll remove some stressors from your life which will lower your overall stress levels.
Second, you’ll be better able to handle situations that can be stressful that you might not be able to avoid.
The best part about doing these things, other than being a happier person and less stressed out, is that you will actually help heal your skin. Being stressed produces certain hormones that can have negative effects on your skin. So by eliminating what you can control and better managing what you can’t, it will help your hormones out and in turn get you closer to clearer skin and a truly happy life.
10 Ways To Reduce Stress For The Acne Sufferer
Starting with the obvious here, but it really works. This study showed that meditating led to a pronounced improvement in people with psoriasis undergoing phototherapy. I used to meditate using this mp3 except I switched out anything about psoriasis with acne. On the in breathe I would imagine breathing in pure healing light and on the exhale I would imagine releasing toxins and negativity. Now I practice transcendental meditation and I can’t recommend it enough. You have to find a teacher and learn it. www.TM.org has more info.
2. Having gratitude
The real difference between happy people and unhappy people is the level of gratitude they have for the things in their life. I’ve written out 3 things I’m grateful for every single day for over a year, and that has dramatically increased my level up happiness. Writing out 3 things you’re grateful every day has been scientifically proven to increase your level of happiness. People who write out the things they’re grateful for are happier and less depressed after just one week. Write out and verbally say what you are grateful for every day forces you to focus on the positive. I suggest doing this in your journal at night before going to bed at night or right when you wake up in the morning.
3. Going for walks/run
Sometimes you just need to walk it out. When angry, one of the worst things you can do is to stay still. That leads into the fourth way to reduce stress.
4. Move your body
Back when I still had bad acne despite me doing everything in my power to get over it, I would be happy 98% of the time. But there were always those time where I’d look in the mirror and just break. I’d get so angry and sad. I quickly looked up when the next yoga class was at the studio I go to. It was 15 minutes from now. I jumped into my car and drove straight there. I made it my declaration to be 100% present to the class and my movements. Within 20 minutes all of the self deprecating thoughts I had about myself vanished and I was once again happy. It’s absolutely amazing what you can accomplish by making a declaration to be present on a practice or workout routine and to stick with it. Next time you get upset, take 30 minutes to exercise and focus on your movements and breathing.
5. Practicing yoga
This honestly deserves its own place. The reason I love yoga for destressing is that it keeps you in the parasympathetic rest and digest state. Other, more hard hitting exercises can put you in the sympathetic fight or flight state. If you’re upset, I’m not sure that’s the best place to be in. The second reason yoga is so amazing is that there is someone guiding you. You get to focus your attention on them and the directions. It gives you a precise point to concentrate on. In order to stop thinking about something, you have to think about something else. Having a teacher guiding you through different motions forces you to think of something else.
6. Slow down and eat food in a happy state
It is not a good idea to eat while upset. But if you do some exercise and are hungry after, that would be the best time to eat. Slow down and eat when you’re happy. Your mood affects your digestion, so if you’re upset it can negatively affect digestion. And that can lead to more problems.
7. Getting chiropractic care
Did you know that a pinched nerve or out of place spine can cause anger, resentment and frustration? Making sure that your spine is aligned by going to a chiropractor. They might even be able to help with acne as well by creating better flow of energy throughout the body.
Another way to increase flow of energy throughout the body. This can be a great healing modality to try out.
9. Focus less on yourself and more on others
Is there anything you can do for anyone in your life that would help them out? Giving to others is one of the best ways to create more happiness in your life. The more you give, the more you get.
10. Actively saying and feeling positive affirmations
It may take a while to believe them, but the more you tell yourself that you’re awesome, hot and capable of anything, the more you start to believe it. I’ve been telling myself “I’m awesome” for years now. I used to do it before taking tests, giving speeches, or talking to people. I did it as part of my meditation sequence. And I believe it really helped me believe more in myself and feel better. And You. Are. Awesome.
Bonus #1. Stop Giving A Sh*t What Other People Think Of You
Easier said than done, but it is possible. Having higher self-esteem helps with this. The best way I know how to increase self esteem is to do comfort zone challenges every single day for 30 days. Comfort zone challenges are when you do things that scare the sh*t out of you on purpose to get over your fears. I did this when I still had acne and it changed my life. For 30 days I would talk to strangers, workout at WholeFoods, and do other unusual but bold things. Doing that changed my life. I also read books on the topic and learned the science behind our behaviors. I encourage you to do both.
Bonus #2. Actually Get Clear Skin
I’ll end this here.
You don’t need clear skin to love yourself and feel amazing 24/7, but it helps. There’s no other way around it. Unless we move into a cave on a mountaintop, we aren’t escaping society’s ever empowering image of what we should look/act/be like. That’s why I wrote the Clear Skin Nutrition Book. That’s why I give away advice that’s taken me years to uncover on this site.
That’s also why I offer Renu28 and the other products from ASEA. Drinking ASEA and applying Renu28 to my skin was the only topical product that has ever worked for me. And it’s worked for hundreds of other people too. It is the number one topical product I recommend.
If you feel like you’ve been eating ridiculously clean for months or years and you can’t find a topical product that actually works, use Renu28. It’s made with only 4, 100% natural ingredients that actually improve the cells of the skin. It’s safe, effective and proven to work. So far it has a 100% success rate (yes, a 100% success rate) in helping to clear people’s skin. I don’t know of ANY other product that can claim the same.
It’s up to you to take action on what you read.
And I’m telling you right now, I needed a combined effort of diet, lifestyle, and topical (Renu28), plus advanced functional medicine protocols to finally clear up my acne.
You can get Renu28 here.
